Do I Need a Visa to Enter the EU Now?

As of August 2024, UK travellers do not need a visa to visit European Union or Schengen Area countries for short stays. British citizens can spend up to 90 days within a 180-day period in these regions without a visa. For longer stays, a visa specific to the country you plan to stay in will be required.

Changes are on the horizon. By mid-2025, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will be introduced. This system will impact UK travellers planning trips to the EU.

What UK Travellers Need to Know About EU Entry Requirement

The ETIAS is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals traveling to 30 European countries, including popular destinations like France, Spain, Greece, and Italy. Once approved, ETIAS will be linked to your passport and will allow you to travel to these countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This authorization will be valid for up to three years or until your passport expires.

It’s important to note that having ETIAS authorization does not guarantee entry; border guards will still check your passport and other documents to ensure you meet the entry requirements.

When Will ETIAS Be Implemented?

The ETIAS system is expected to start rolling out in mid-2025. However, UK travellers won’t need to apply until the transitional period ends, which means the earliest you’ll need to secure ETIAS is November 2025.

How Much Will ETIAS Cost?

ETIAS will cost €7. However, this fee is waived for applicants under 18 and over 70 years old, as well as for family members of EU citizens and non-EU nationals with the right to move freely within the EU. Despite the fee exemption, all individuals must apply for authorization.
