Share

New Travel Rule from January 2025

From January 8, 2025, Australians planning short visits to the UK (less than six months) will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This new rule applies to tourists and business travelers who previously enjoyed visa-free entry. The ETA will cost around AUD $20 or £10.

How to Apply for the ETA

Starting November 27, 2024, Australians can apply for the ETA online via the UK ETA app or the UK government website. The application requires:

  • A photo of your passport.
  • A facial photograph.

The ETA allows multiple visits to the UK for up to six months at a time and remains valid for two years or until the passport expires.

Important Details

  • All travelers, including children and infants, need an ETA.
  • Refunds are not available after applying.
  • Most applications will be processed within three working days, but delays are possible.
  • Australians with dual British or Irish citizenship are exempt if they travel using their British or Irish passport.
  • The UK aims to enhance border security while maintaining ease of travel for eligible visitors.

The UK remains a favorite, ranking fifth among the top destinations for Australians in 2023–2024, following Indonesia, New Zealand, the USA, and Japan.
