Weather Expectations for Greater Manchester

The Met Office has updated its forecast, bringing good news for Greater Manchester: the region is likely to avoid the worst of the predicted thunderstorms.

Initial Warning and UpdatePreviously, a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms covered most of England and Wales, with warnings of potential flooding and disruptions from 1 am on Thursday until midnight. However, on Thursday morning, the Met Office reduced the size of the warning area, stating that “the main risk period in northern and far eastern areas has subsided.” As a result, Manchester now falls just outside the warning zone.

What to Expect in Greater Manchester

According to the Met Office, Greater Manchester is expected to experience a pleasant day with warm temperatures and minimal impact from the wet and windy weather affecting other parts of the UK. Met Office spokesperson Grahame Madge said: “Although there is forecast to be a lot of impactful conditions associated with the frequent lightning across parts of the UK today, currently Manchester sits outside of the main warning area where we expect the greatest impacts to occur.”

Revised Warning Area

The yellow weather warning now covers the Midlands, parts of Wales, London, and the south of England. The updated warning indicates: “Scattered slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop through this afternoon and evening, particularly across parts of central and southern England, and perhaps also east and southeast Wales.”

Potential Impacts

While not all areas within the warning zone will experience storms, those that do could see torrential downpours producing 50mm or more of rain in 1-2 hours. In some cases, isolated accumulations of up to 100mm could occur where multiple showers or storms move over the same area, leading to surface water flooding risks. So, for Greater Manchester residents, it’s a relief to know that the worst of the storms are likely to bypass the area, allowing for a warm and pleasant day ahead.
